The full Sicily road-trip loop

A genuine road trip, not a slow tour

This is the brisker sibling of Sicily in two weeks — the same coastal perimeter, mostly one night per stop, built for travellers who’d rather cover the island’s full circumference and see more places briefly than settle into fewer bases for longer. It skips the Aeolian Islands entirely (a ferry-dependent detour doesn’t suit a tight driving loop) and adds Cefalù directly into the route instead of treating it as a side trip.

Day 1 — Palermo

Land and spend the day on the old town essentials — the Cappella Palatina, Quattro Canti, Ballarò market. Book a timed-entry tour of the Cappella Palatina and Palazzo dei Normanni.

Day 2 — Cefalù

Drive to Cefalù, about an hour. The beach sits directly against the medieval old town — climb La Rocca for the view, or just swim.

Day 3 — Back through Palermo to Trapani

Drive to Trapani, about 2 hours from Cefalù via Palermo. Walk the old town’s Baroque churches and fish market, watching for the ZTL around the historic core.

Day 4 — Erice and Marsala

Cable car or drive up to Erice in the morning (about 20-30 minutes), then down to Marsala in the afternoon (about 40 minutes from Erice) for a wine cellar visit. Join a guided walking tour of Trapani with a cannolo tasting stop if you’d rather do this as a slower single-town day instead.

Day 5 — The drive to Agrigento

Drive to Agrigento, about 2 hours from Marsala along the south coast. Settle in for the evening; tomorrow is the Valley of the Temples.

Day 6 — Valley of the Temples

Book a guided Valley of the Temples and old town tour, and budget three to four hours for the full uncovered site.

Day 7 — The long drive to Syracuse

Drive to Syracuse, about 2 hours 45 minutes — the longest single leg of this whole loop, and a genuine travel day. This is the point in a 12-day road trip where fatigue tends to peak; if you can spare an extra rest day anywhere, this is where to add it.

Day 8 — Syracuse and Ortigia

The Neapolis archaeological park and a walk through Ortigia. Book a guided tour of Ortigia and the Neapolis archaeological park.

Day 9 — Noto and Ragusa

Drive to Noto in the morning (about 40 minutes) for the Baroque Corso, then on to Ragusa Ibla in the afternoon (about an hour further) for its staircase streets. This is a genuinely full day of driving and sightseeing combined — if you’re tired, cut this: pick one town, not both.

Day 10 — On to Catania

Drive to Catania, about an hour and a half from Ragusa. La Pescheria fish market and the Baroque core.

Day 11 — Etna

Drive to Rifugio Sapienza, about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Book the Etna cable car return ticket. Access above 2,900m depends on volcanic activity and requires a licensed guide — never expect a guaranteed summit.

Day 12 — Taormina and departure

Drive to Taormina, about 50 minutes, for a final morning on Corso Umberto and the ancient theatre before heading back to Catania Fontanarossa for departure, about 50 minutes away.

Practical notes

ZTL zones apply in Palermo, Cefalù, Trapani, Ortigia, Noto, Ragusa Ibla, Catania and Taormina — a one-night stay doesn’t exempt you from a camera fine, so check parking before driving into any historic center.
