Things to Do on Mount Etna
Etna is Europe's most active volcano, and access to the summit craters is genuinely restricted and changes with volcanic activity — above roughly 2,900m a certified alpine guide is legally required, so anyone promising a guaranteed summit is guessing. Rifugio Sapienza on the south side (around 1,900m, about an hour from Catania) and Piano Provenzana on the north are the two real starting points, reached by cable car and 4x4 rather than on foot from the road. Lower down, Bronte's pistachio groves and Etna DOC wineries are a genuine, lower-risk alternative if the summit is closed.
